A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has been recorded near a small Wheatbelt town with tremors felt throughout Perth, down to Pinjarra and as far south as Albany.

Geoscience Australia’s National Earthquake Alerts Centre recorded the earthquake at 2.01am (AWST) near Wyalkatchem.

Over 500 people have reported feeling the earthquake via the Earthquakes@GA website.

Most of the reports are centred around Perth, with some in Rockingham, Kwinana, Baldivis, Pinjarra and Dwellingup.

Geoscience Australian Senior Seismologist Dr Trevor Allen said the Wyalkatchem area had recorded more than 130 earthquakes in the past year.

“Prior to today’s event, the largest earthquake in the region was a magnitude 4.5, so this is the certainly the largest earthquake that we have seen in the current sequence in the Wyalkatchem area,” he said.

"It is possible that there might have been some damage to building in the area, however it is quite a remote area so we wouldn't expect to see a large amount of damage resulting from this earthquake."
