Experts are reminding us to Slip, Slop and Slap with the UV index tipped to hit extreme levels today and tomorrow.
As the summer party season kicks off this weekend we're being reminded to take note of the UV level and use clothing as well as sunscreen to protect us from the sun.
11 on the UV index is considered extreme and this weekend it's tipped to hit 13 for Saturday and Sunday, despite potential cloud cover.
Professor Sanchia Aranda, CEO Cancer Council Australia said “Too many Australians still rely on temperature to determine whether they need sun protection, instead of checking the UV level. Temperatures across the country will vary this weekend, but UV levels are forecast to be extreme right across the country."
A recent study by the Cancer Council showed Aussies are too complacent about covering up and are relying too heavily on sunscreen to block out the UV rays.
Dr Andrew Miller, President of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, says while Melanoma rates in people aged 40 and under are dropping, many adults are still getting sunburnt on the weekends.
"It’s a real concern that sun protection behaviours overall don’t seem to be improving and that over 2.7 million Australians are putting themselves at risk of skin cancer by getting sunburnt on summer weekends."
Tips for staying protected this weekend:
- Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outside
- Reapply every 2 hours or sooner if you're swimming or sweating
- Seek shade
- Wear a hat with a broad brim
- Wear protective clothing and sunglasses
