The $4.9 million Singleton Sports and Community Centre has been officially opened after 18 months of construction at Laurie Stanford Reserve.
The project involved the demolition of the old Comet Bay Bowling Club and Singleton Hall to make room for the creation of an expanded and renovated Singleton Sports and Community Centre, along with general reserve improvements such as a new playground, shelters and barbecue area.
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said Laurie Stanford Reserve is a significant sporting and community asset for the community of Singleton.
“Connected communities are strong communities and it is a priority for this council to ensure new facilities can be used by a number of different groups to meet their different needs.
“Instrumental to the success of the project was the strong partnership formed between the key user groups including Comet Bay Bowling Club, Singleton/Golden Bay Tennis Club, Singleton Irwinians Cricket Club, Singleton Playgroup, Peel Junior Soccer Association, Singleton Residents Association and Singleton Social Club. These groups have come together to form the new Singleton Social and Sporting Association.
“Construction would not have been possible without the generous support of the State Government, which contributed nearly $370,000 through the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund.
"The Fund aims to increase participation in sport and recreation with an emphasis on physical activity through rational development of good quality, well designed and well utilised facilities."
