The City of Rockingham has rejected plans for a telephone tower in the heart of Secret Harbour.
The new Rockingham council team held it's first ordinary meeting last night with many local residents also attending to remind councillors they are against the 23.8m high Telstra tower.
The proposed location is right next to the Secret Harbour Shopping Centre on the western side of Warnbro Sound Avenue and south of Secret Harbour Boulevard.
The majority of Councillors agreed with residents and voted down the application 7-3 with some expressing concerns about the tower's proximity to a nearby school.
A report presented to council said Secret Harbour Primary School classrooms are situated approximately 330m from the Telecommunications infrastructure site.
The application was made in response to a perceived need for improved Telstra coverage in the Secret Harbour area.
A total of 570 landowners and occupiers were consulted and of the 41 submissions received by council, 36 objected to the proposal.
Some of the issues raised were exposure to radiation, adverse impact on property values while a number of concerns were raised regarding the tower's visual impact.
