Organised Crime Squad detectives are seeking information regarding the discovery of an active hydroponic set-up at a residence in Yangebup this morning, Friday 29 June 2018.
Just after 6:10am Police were called to a house fire in Dugong View, Yangebup. At first the police attendance was to provide traffic management support to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, however it was quickly established by fire fighters that the electricity supply to the house had been illegally modified.
Fire fighters dealt with the fire, and once it was safe to enter the property a large hydroponic set-up was located in at least six rooms of the house, along with an amount of Cannabis plants. The extent of items in the house has not yet been established due to the amount of damage caused by the fire and the limited access that has been gained so far.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Matthews from the Organised Crime Squad said he encourages members of the community to report any suspicious activity at houses where they believe illegal activity such drug cultivation is taking place.
“In addition to the illicit drugs being produced the illegal modification to electricity supply systems create a dangerous environment for neighbours, particularly when their power supplies have been interfered with.
“In one recent example a neighbour who had their electricity supply interfered with experienced minor electrical sensations while using a shower and then again when checking their meter box.
“The modification of electrical supply to a house is extremely dangerous and puts innocent people in direct risk of harm.”
Anyone with information regarding properties being used for the cultivation of Cannabis is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
