The City of Rockingham is taking over the management of the Mike Barnett Sports Complex saying it's Council's preferred business model.
The decision has been made this week to assume direct management of the Mike Barnett Sports Complex in Rockingham as of 1 January 2018.
Mayor Barry Sammels said the City will work closely with the current manager YMCA to ensure a smooth transition.
“We will also communicate directly with the associations and staff to keep them fully informed.
“We believe Local Government is highly experienced in this type of operation and the time is right to manage the City’s premier indoor sports facility in-house”.
The move follows the City taking direct responsibility for the Aqua Jetty facility as of 1 July 2017.
The Mike Barnett Sports Complex is owned by the City of Rockingham and is a popular and well-used community facility.
Built in 1986, this type of facility would cost in excess of $18 million to build today.
It is home to the Rockingham Basketball Recreation Association and Rockingham Districts Netball Associations, and State Basketball League team the Rockingham Flames.
