The City of Mandurah is letting motorists and pedestrians know that two sets of roadworks on Pinjarra Road should be finished in December.
Works are progressing well on the reconstruction of the Mandurah Road/Pinjarra Road intersection, with the project anticipated to finish in early December.
The reconstruction has involved widening the roads to accommodate future traffic volumes as the redeveloped Mandurah Forum shopping centre nears completion.
The road widening extends approximately 200-300m in each direction of the intersection.
It was the City of Mandurah and Main Roads WA’s vision to expand the roadworks to accommodate the future traffic demand and thus remove the need for future works and subsequent disruption to motorists.
To accommodate the growth in vehicle numbers associated with the Mandurah Forum shopping centre redevelopment, the upgrade of the intersection and road widening was essential.
The $9million upgrade project is being jointly funded by the City, Main Roads WA and Vicinity Centres.
The project is a requirement of the Western Australian Planning Commission as part of the shopping complex redevelopment.
On the back of the new Mandurah Bridge works, the City has taken the opportunity to enhance Pinjarra Road between the bridge and Sholl Street.
The works are part of the vision for a pedestrian-oriented city centre and being undertaken to increase pedestrian safety in the area.
The works include removing the centre median strip, relocating the central street lighting to the verge, overhead gantry-style traffic signals at Sholl Street, speed limit reduction in this area, and verge pavement upgrades.
These works are anticipated to be completed in December.
Traffic lights are being installed at the intersection of Peel Street and Sutton Street.
This is the final stage in the roadworks which will provide a traffic link for Sutton Street to connect through to Mandurah Terrace.
The traffic light installation works are due to be completed in the new year.
