The City of Rockingham has purchased 19.41 hectares of land on Eighty Road to build the Baldivis District Sporting Complex.
Baldivis residents are a big step closer to having much-needed playing fields and clubhouses to cater for local sport and community groups.
The West Australian reports the land was purchased at a price of $9.725 million and will be used to build a major sporting facility over several stages.
Stage One of the project will provide the community with playing space equal to four senior-sized AFL ovals, supported by one senior and one junior clubroom facility. This first stage is expected to be able to cater for most popular winter and summer sporting codes.
Future stages of the development will include a multi-purpose indoor recreation centre and outdoor hardcourts.
The first phase is to obtain all necessary approvals to create a site development layout which will enable construction to commence.
Mayor Barry Sammels said the City would now be completing detailed site planning for the complex.
“The Baldivis District Sporting Complex will play a vital role in the community’s long term fitness, health and welfare, and will provide important recreation, sporting and social opportunities for many generations to come,” Mayor Sammels said.
"A major facility like this will not only be a valuable asset to the local community, it will also be able to cater for larger regional events and competitions.
“The Eighty Road site was selected because it provides enough land to develop a multipurpose sport and recreation complex, conveniently located to ensure easy access and availability for the Baldivis community.”
Mayor Sammels said consultation had commenced and the community would be kept fully informed during the planning and construction stages.
