The community will be able to share their thoughts on a draft of the City of Rockingham’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2020 - 2023.
The RAP focuses on driving social change and improving economic opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The latest RAP is the City’s third, with the first developed in 2011 and the second developed in 2014.
The proposed RAP follows the template provided by Reconciliation Australia (RA) and its actions align to the key elements that are required by RA which include respect, relationships, opportunities and reporting.
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the RAP was an important strategic commitment to reconciliation.
“Growing and nurturing community connectedness and wellbeing is one of the aspirations in the City’s Strategic Community Plan 2019 – 2029, and the RAP puts the City in a position to be able to show leadership in the area of reconciliation,” Mayor Sammels said.
“The RAP will assist the City in achieving key elements by turning intention into action. The commitment to the RAP is a two way process that will require the City and the community to come together to build relationships, respect and opportunities.
“Extensive consultation has already been undertaken to make sure the RAP reflects the thoughts and ideas of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the community, and will be achievable by the City.
“Now, we are encouraging as many people as possible in the City to share their thoughts on the draft RAP so we can continue working towards a future where all members of the community feel welcome and are acknowledged.”
